Some believe that democracy in Israel is threatend by a new bill introduced into the Israeli Knesset. The bill acknowledges Israel as a "religious" state as opposed to one administered according to "public law." Also of concern is that the bill minutely details the Jewish essence of the country while democracy receives only one clause. One interpretation of the bill is that Israel would no longer be committed to protecting the civil rights of all. Instead a dictatorship of the majority would rule. Because the bill emphasizes Judaism over freedom it is feared that religious political power would destroy the judicial branch putting minorities and secular people at risk of losing their civil liberties.
