Advocating 'direct action', hardline Buddhist monks and groups in Sri Lanka are attacking mosques and alleged Muslim owned businesses every few days. Claiming that Muslims are seeking to destroy their culture and take over the country, they appear to have government support as the Defence Secretary states that Buddhist monks are protecting 'country, religion and race.' While there is no evidence that Muslims are having larger families, hardliners claim that Muslims advise non-Muslims to have small families while encouraging large Muslim families. Some Christians have also come under attack. Those who criticize the extremists' actions are reminded of the attacks against Tamils prior to the war.
